The Ypsilanti Curriculum Demonstration Project (CDP) was designed to address the question of whether some approaches to compensatory preschool education for economically disadvantaged children were more effective than others under controlled experimental conditions. The CDP examined the effects of three preschool curriculum models on children's cognitive, linguistic, socioemotional and academic skills development while holding noncurriculum factors as constant as possible across the programs being compared. Measurement of the development of these various skills focused on both concurrent gains and longitudinal assessment during elementary school. Each of the three curricula selected for comparison in the CDP represented one of the following approaches: (1) the language training curriculum; (2) the cognitively oriented curriculum; and (3) the unit-based curriculum. Families included in the sample lived within Ypsilanti public school attendance areas, were of low income, and had three year old children who scored below average on the Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale. Findings indicated no significant differences between children in the three programs on cognitive measures administered during the first five years of elementary school. The three programs were equally effective through fourth grade for children with varying entry characteristics. Assessment measures are described in the appendices. (Author/AM)
