Noting that
it is no longer acceptable for children--both Native and non-Native--to
be hurt by racist ideologies which justify and perpetuate oppression,
this book presents a variety of contributions from Native American
people concerning the Native American experience in books for children.
The book includes: nine essays confronting the impact on children
of stereotyping and distortion of history; 33 poems by Native Americans;
essays on the Native American in children's literature; numerous
book reviews; and a list of criteria for choosing non-racist and
undistorted books about Native Americans. A list of 42 organizations
concerned with providing accurate learning materials about Native
cultures, a 170-item selected bibliography, and a 53-item annotated
bibliography of books published before 1973 by Native Americans
are attached. (RS)
