This book
provides information on the research into minority-parent involvement
in education, focusing specifically on the involvement of parents
who experience social and economic limitations to full participation
in American society: racial and ethnic minority-group members, low-income
families, poorly educated parents, and parents who do not speak
English. Following an introduction, the chapters deal with current
research, practice, and potential opportunities. The chapters are:
(1) "Collaboration between Schools and Disadvantaged Parents:
Obstacles and Openings" (Moles); (2) "Parents' Attitudes
and Practices of Involvement in Inner-City Elementary and Middle
Schools" (Dauber and Epstein); (3) "Minority Parents and
the Elementary School: Attitudes and Practices" (Chavkin and
Williams); (4) "Homework-Focused
Parenting Practices that Positively Affect Student Achievement"
(Clark); (5) "Minority Parents and Their Youth: Concern, Encouragement,
and Support for School Achievement" (Ritter and others); (6)
"Improving Education for Minority Adolescents: Toward an Ecological
Perspective on School Choice and Parent Involvement" (Bauch);
(7) "Strategies for Working Effectively with Asian Immigrant
Parents" (Yao); (8) "Cultural Values and American-Indian
Families" (Sipes); (9) "Teaming with Parents To Promote
Educational Equality for Language Minority Students" (Bermudez);
(10) "Increasing Student Achievement through Teacher Knowledge
about Parent Involvement" (Simich-Dudgeon); (11) "Benefits
and Barriers to Parent Involvement: From Portugal to Boston To Liverpool"
(Davies); (12) "School Social Workers Helping Multiethnic Families,
Schools, and Communities Join Forces" (Chavkin); (13) "A
New Paradigm for Parent Involvement" (Seeley); (14) "Building
the Bridge To Research
Minority Parents: Education Infrastructure Supporting Success for
All Children" (Rich); and (15) "Families as Educators
in a Pluralistic Society" (Scott-Jones). Each of the chapters
includes references, and a list of resource organizations for information
on minority parent involvement is appended. (SM)
