This book
presents extensive sampling of a "whole math" curriculum
for preschool and kindergarten children ages 3 and older. An introductory
chapter is followed by seven curriculum chapters that discuss math
manipulatives, collections, grid games, path games, graphing, math
and gross-motor play, and the "math suitcase." Each chapter
is divided into three sections. The first section provides background
information and suggestions for teachers on each of the chapter
topics. The second section is composed of activities that illustrate
how to make the materials and provide suggestions for implementation.
Each chapter ends with several anecdotes that describe real-life
interactions with some of the materials. For each of over 100 activities
included, the guide: (1) provides a detailed description of the
materials needed; (2) identifies the level of development that the
material targets; (3) describes a number of scenarios to guide teachers
as they watch a range of children interact with the material; (4)
lists ways in which to vary the activities; (5) provides ideas for
possible questions to ask for each activity; (6) makes suggestions
for coordinating the math material with other math activities and
with other areas of the curriculum; and (7) offers helpful hints.
To assist teachers in assessing their children's progress, assessment
forms are included. (AA)
