This book
brings together in one volume a sampling of primary source materials
from the historical development of curriculum in the United States.
The materials describe what has been or might have been taught in
U.S. schools from the 17th century through the 20th century. The
materials are arranged in chronological order focusing specific
issues or topics. The selection of documents for inclusion was based
on influence, representativeness, and exemplification. The 36 documents
range in years from 1642 to 1983. Sources for the documents include
Benjamin Franklin, Horace Mann, the Chicago Board of Education,
John Dewey, the National Education Association, the Faculty of Yale
College, Jerome S. Bruner, and The Harvard Committee. Each document
is introduced by a short essay explaining its historical context
and significance. The book provides a comprehensive historical record
of the evolution of the curriculum in the United States. (EH)
